Surf's up! (I wish...) A review of the SURFSET® Fitness class

It's February.  It's cold.  It's snowing (again).  And, I really miss the beach and hot summer days. About a year ago I ran across the SURFSET® Fitness class which simulates surfing indoors to provide a great workout.

The official SURFSET® Fitness website (http://www.surfsetfitness.com/) explains that they have "designed 4 Signature SURFSET® Programs to deliver maximum results for all fitness levels.  SURFSET® Balance, Burn, Build & Blend are each structured in custom intervals to shock our body systems and create real change.  Whether you're interested in improving stability & body control, burning fat, building lean muscle or achieving total body fitness, there is a SURFSET® program for you. Balance is yoga-inspired; Burn is high-intensity, high-tempo; Build is focused on strength & definition; Blend is our internal-based core session that combines it all."

Unfortunately, even though I discovered this quite some time ago, the closest place to me that had the class was about two hours away.  So I waited and waited and finally two places nearby added the class and I was able to test it out.  It was an hour long and it seemed like it flew by because I was having so much fun.  Don't get me wrong, while the hour flew by it was still a lot of work and I was out of breath and sweaty by the end of class (make sure you take a bottle of water with you).  The board has bungee straps on the side so you can adjust the difficulty level to whatever you would like. Personally, being a first-timer, I left all of the bungee straps attached to make it easier on myself.  The class I participated in was the interval-based Blend session.  The instructor was great and made sure to help everyone in the class adjust their form and she provided modifications to be either easier or more challenging based on your skill and preference.  We did everything from frog hops, to planks, push-ups, burpees and even carved out a few imaginary waves on the board.  It was so much fun, I can't wait to go back and do it again!  If I can't go surfing for real right now, this is the next best thing.

And, if you're stuck like I was in an area that hasn't picked up the classes just yet, you can still experience SURFSET®.  Through their website you can purchase a board for your home and you will have access to all of their online training videos to help get your workout in. AND, because the SURFSET® team is so amazingly awesome, they are giving all of you $50 off the retail price of the board; just enter code "RSX" during checkout to receive the discount.  But don't worry, the program is so great and is getting a ton of exposure lately; I'm sure it won't be long before it pops up in your area. Happy surfing!
